Not That Guy - Favorite Anime OPs part 5 - Baccano

In the genre of anime the openings are a serious component. Any anime worth their salt will put substantial effort into a polished opening sequence. While in the American market we treat openings somewhat like a book cover, something appreciated but nothing to judge by, for the anime an opening is often used as the first judgment of a series. It is the chance to not only illustrate the visual appeal and aesthetics but also gives the viewer an indication of the quality of the audio through their choice of soundtracks. In a genre where the visual and audio style can make or break a series the opening serves a vital role of promoting their creation. In many of the examples that I will be covering, you will be left with a strong impression of how you feel about the specific anime just from the OP's. The beauty of this though, is that often, this impression is correct.

Today we go into another classic: Baccano! I love watching Baccano. It is a great series and has a great intro. It is also a rare anime in that its dubs are debatably better then subs (It is truly a rare occurrence).

I have trouble believing that the intro is only a minute and a half in length. It packs so much information in that short moment that it feels as if a great period of time has passed. The intro essentially introduces every major character in the anime (of which there are 19). Note: Two characters do not get captioned, one because he's relatively minor, another because he never settles on a name. Introducing 19 characters in a minute thirty is quite a feat if done mediocre, a masterstroke if done well and Baccano does it very well. The structure of the opening is to transition between characters through inanimate objects shared between scenes. Money, bottles, darts and knives all help make the transition. It is an enjoyable and interesting effect. Not only do all the characters get introduced by name but we are given a glimpse of their personality as well. Issac and Miria are playful and comedic. Szilard is the antagonist.  Ennis is submissive and so on.

So enjoy and I highly recommend watching the anime as well. It is a great one.
