It was recently confirmed that on January 23, 2014 - Justin Carmical, better known in the gaming community as JewWario, took his own life.
JW stood out from other Channel Awesome critics and reviewers - he was rarely negative, he taught others, and the love and joy he got from games was never in question. He was also one of the "older" critics - showing users like myself that there was no "too old to start" in this industry.
Obviously, I am not a part of Channel Awesome - but I have interacted with Justin before. Besides Social Media, where he is very approachable and willing to discuss any number of things with you - I had lent him a game from my personal collection for purposes of review. This game became his review for Pepsi-Man. He did a phenomenal job and gave it the care and unique insight that you don't see from "Angry" critics.
Justin looked at everything in a unique perspective, that of childhood excitement, and passion. That is why this news seems so very difficult to digest. I did not know Justin as well as those closer to him - but he served as an inspiration to me, gave me plenty of advice (the first thing you need is lighting.. the second thing you need.. is lighting) and he was nothing but kind and courteous to me.
I just took a second to look over some old email correspondence between him and I. He was so excited to be approached about the game. That's the love that we all should have for our hobbies and interests. It breaks my heart to know that it wasn't enough for him and I want to send the sincerest condolences to his friends, family and fans. We must make sure that we remember him fondly for his contributions in life and not for the events of his passing. It's the least we can do for a great guy like him.
Rest in Peace Justin "JewWario" Carmical,
Sincerely,
Jimm Morrison (Jimmy TehFreak)
EDIT - I've been asked to post the review J-Dub had done. It was my copy of the game he's holding in his hand. It sits, once again, in my collection - and I had intended to review the game next month. I had even teased the review over the last month.. but now I don't think I should. J-Dub's review was definitive, and when I think of this game now, the only thing I want to be reminded of is how happy he was that I could offer it to him and how excited he was to review it.
