Channel Awesome Video: Mr Awesome Goes to Washington

We are not affiliated with Channel Awesome or thatguyeiththeglasses.com - but this is something that affects us and all internet posters - please give a look.

Lindsay Ellis, better known as your Nostalgia Chick, is an american critic and online movie creator. She takes classic movies and television from her childhood, analyzes and reviews them. Her work today is protected by the US Millenium Act - which protects her right to the use of copyrighted material because she uses clips and footage for review purposes.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Properties Act (PIPA) are intended to protect copyrighted materials, such as movies, television, and music, from being pirated by online stream, torrent download and other acts of piracy that cost creators their well earned revenue. These bills also give copyright owners the right to contact Internet Service Providers and force the ISPs to take down and delist websites that host this illegal content, making them inaccessable worldwide without due process.

Heres the problem - the wording in both potential bills are so murky that PIPA and SOPA could circumvent the Millenium Act and shut down websites - like Channel Awesome and, of course our own at freakandnitro.com, without right to dispute.

You ever get irritated at how you can put a video up on Youtube and use a 20 second music clip that Warner Music Group claims ownership of - and your video is pulled down by WMG without appeal or the right to defend yourself? Imagine the whole of the internet doing that - and you don't get the opportunity to say "wait a second, I wasn't streaming their film - I was promoting it" or "I was playing this game on camera with our own recorded commentary to help consumers find out if it's worth buying".

Freakandnitro.com is a proud Canadian product - but many of the services we use and need to function are owned and operated in the United States - including but not limited to:
-Blip.tv
-Youtube
-Blogger
-Adbrite
-Godaddy

so if these bills pass without rewrites that make more specific targets and still protect those of us that aren't using content illegally, we're dead in the water - as well as almost all the sites you know and love.

Hell, even youtube could get shut down just for hosting the content. The bill is THAT nondescript.

For those of us outside of the USA, steps are being taken to find out how we can contribute in a productive way (internet petitions dont do crap).

This is something that affects all of us, short term and long. If these new restrictions pass in the lousy wording, who knows how it can change next. Preserve our internet.
