Not That Guy - Favorite Anime OPs part 6 - Samurai Champaloo

In the genre of anime the openings are a serious component. Any anime worth their salt will put substantial effort into a polished opening sequence. While in the American market we treat openings somewhat like a book cover, something appreciated but nothing to judge by, for the anime an opening is often used as the first judgment of a series. It is the chance to not only illustrate the visual appeal and aesthetics but also gives the viewer an indication of the quality of the audio through their choice of soundtracks. In a genre where the visual and audio style can make or break a series the opening serves a vital role of promoting their creation. In many of the examples that I will be covering, you will be left with a strong impression of how you feel about the specific anime just from the OP's. The beauty of this though, is that often, this impression is correct.

My attempt at reviewing anime OP's has been derailed somewhat by the complete and utter failure of my laptop. I need to thank Ting Ting for lending me her spare. With 512mb a ram it is a slow beast but it is a million times more responsive then my MSI currently is.

Well we are onto yet another anime by Shinichirō Watanabe; Samurai Champaloo. Shinichirō Watanabe is most famous for Cowboy Bebop of course but Samurai Champaloo is also quite successful. SC centers around three characters thrown together by chance. Not a "only they can save the world" plot here, just them solving their problems and remaining together out of convenience. The anime takes place in the Edo period of Japan, refencing actual historical events and was fused with modern street cultures (street gangs, graffiti and hip hop).

The opening is a mix of edo period backdrops and is accompanied by a hip hop mix "Battlecry" by Nujabes and Shing02. The opening for Samurai Champaloo is one of the most novel credit sequences I have seen and is a pleasure to watch on its own.
