Not That Guy - Favorite Anime OPs part 3 - Keroro Gunso (Sgt. Frog)

In the genre of anime the openings are a serious component. Any anime worth their salt will put substantial effort into a polished opening sequence. While in the American market we treat openings somewhat like a book cover, something appreciated but nothing to judge by, for the anime an opening is often used as the first judgment of a series. It is the chance to not only illustrate the visual appeal and aesthetics but also gives the viewer an indication of the quality of the audio through their choice of soundtracks. In a genre where the visual and audio style can make or break a series the opening serves a vital role of promoting their creation. In many of the examples that I will be covering, you will be left with a strong impression of how you feel about the specific anime just from the OP's. The beauty of this though, is that often, this impression is correct.

Kero kero kero! These OP's and ED's are not particularly innovative, beautiful or awe inspiring instead they are fun and overwhelmingly silly. For those of you not familiar with anime the sequences used for Sgt. Frog will probably closely fit the stereotypical spoofs of anime that many of us are familiar with. The cautionary note here though is that Sgt. Frog is a very satirical anime providing parodies of many well known anime (Gundam obviously, but even Neon Geneses Evangelion). So the nature of their openings are really not all that surprising.

After watching the OP/ED's one develops the impression that the development team are very open minded and drawn to experimentation. There is such a wide variety of different ED's for example that I sometimes wonder if they were even made by the same people. One thing that is constent for most of the OP's and ED's is that the singing can be abhorrent. This series contains some of the worst examples of Japanese singing ever.  There are a lot of OP/ED's to watch, the series has just over 350 episodes to its name accompanied by 11 different openings and 18 unique closings so I will not post all of them. Instead I will show one OP and One ED and then link to everything else. Also, sadly alot of the sequences are neither subbed nor dubbed which is a shame since the lyrics are always humorous. I will try to get some fan subs up but in the meantime the links will take you to raws on youtube.

One last thing about Sgt. Frog. The dubbed versions rock. This needs to be pointed out because it is so rare to find good dubbing. The voice team was well choosen and basically given twosixes of the hard stuff and told to go at it with no reservations. As a result the dialogue is crazy and does not always conform to the true script. It is awesome. [Kellen I suggest you watch episode 11 it strikes me that you may relate to the humor of that episode]

There isn't much to say about these OP/ED's. No in depth analyses so without further to do, some of their best:
